About Guejar Sierra

The village of Guejar Sierra nestles in the Genil valley at a height of more than 1,000 metres on the edge of the Sierra Nevada National Park. The population is less than 3,000 but there are all the necessary amenities to make your stay enjoyable. Three local convenience stores will stock most of the basic items you may require; there are several other shops selling meat, fish, hardware as well a pharmacy and newsagent. There are also two banks with ATMs.

At the heart of the village is the Plaza Mayor where the men still gather to watch the world go by under the shade of the trees and nearby is the 17th century parish church. It is here that the local bus service to Granada terminates.

Local Cuisine, Bars, Restaurants and Fiestas:

Then of course there are the local bars and restaurants that give you the opportunity to taste and enjoy the real flavours of the region. The bars are simple and are not large but the welcome you will receive will be very friendly and don't forget that in this part of Spain the tradition of giving tapas with each round of drinks is still continued; this may be anything from a few freshly fried shrimps to a plate of mouth-watering kebabs.

The cuisine is a mix of Arab and Christian flavours; rich stews, cured meats, veal with garlic and a local speciality of 'choto' vie for your attention on the menu. Several restaurants are to be found in the village and surrounding area and those that are a short ride away further up the valley are worth a special mention.

Between the months of February and September several Fiestas are held to celebrate various saints which are always worth experiencing as a traditional Spanish custom.

Scenic Walks:

Just walking around the village is a pleasure in itself, and several walks into the National Park commence here. These are of varying lengths and difficulties and give an opportunity to experience the varied flora and fauna found in this area. The river has been dammed further downstream and this has created a beautiful area of water that also adds another dimension to the scenery. In the summer the peaks of Veleta and Mulhacen can be bagged with relative ease and throughout the year the surrounding valleys show an ever changing display of colours as the seasons change. We have a selection of guidebooks detailing walks in the area and offering information on the flora and fauna of the National Park.
